Cleveland Guardians vs. New York Yankees, Aug. 21, 2024

NEW YORK -- |A|
The Guardians reunited with |B|
their chaos-oriented style of |C|
baseball on Tuesday night. |D|
It came |Q| from a most unexpected |R| source, Lane Thomas. The |S| deadline addition, stuck in |U| a 6 for 53 |V| slump since the trade |Y| from Washington, started a |Z| six-run rally in the |A| 12th inning to lead |B| the Guardians to a |C| 9-5 win over the |D| Yankees.
Lane, pinch-hitting for |E| Bo Naylor, doubled to |F| right off Tim Mayza |G| to score Daniel Schneemann, |H| the automatic runner, to |J| break a 3-3 tie. |K| After that there was |L| no stopping the Guards.
|M| dir="ltr">Brayan Rocchio reached on |O| his second straight bunt |P| single. Steven Kwan forced |Q| Rocchio at second, but |R| Jose Ramirez singled home |S| Thomas to make it |U| 5-3. Michael Tonkin relieved, |V| but Tyler Freeman walked |Y| to load the bases |Z| and David Fry unloaded |A| them with a triple |B| to the wall in |C| right center field for |D| a 8-3 lead. Jhonkensy |E| Noels infield single scored |F| Fry for the sixth |G| and final run of |H| the inning.
The game |J| was not an offensive |K| clinic. The Guardians stranded |L| 20 runners and were |M| 2 for 17 with |O| runners in scoring position |P| before the 12th inning, |Q| but it was enough |R| for the Guardians to |S| end a three-game losing |U| streak
The Guardians loaded |V| the bases in the |Y| 10th, but Josh Naylor |Z| hit into a 6-3 |A| double play to end |B| the inning. Rocchio started |C| the inning with a |D| bunt single to move |E| Bo Naylor, the automatic |F| runner, to third base. |G| But the inning came |H| undone when Kwan struck |J| out in an 11-pitch |K| at-bat against Jake Cousins.
|L| dir="ltr">The strikeout allowed Cousins |M| to intentionally walk Ramirez |O| to bring Josh Naylor |P| to the plate.
Vogt |Q| emptied his bag of |R| tricks to try and |S| win this one. He |U| used Emmanuel Clase for |V| the ninth and 10th |Y| innings. Its the first |Z| time hes pitched more |A| than one inning this |B| season.
The win went |C| to Tim Herrin (5-0), |D| who pitched a scoreless |E| 11th. Scott Barlow finished |F| the game, allowing a |G| two-run double to Aaron |H| Judge before recording three |J| outs.
The game did |K| not start well for |L| Matthew Boyd and the |M| Guardians. Juan Soto and |O| Judge, with one out |P| in the first, hit |Q| consecutive home runs on |R| 2-2 and 3-1 pitches, |S| respectively, for a 2-0 |U| lead. It was the |V| ninth time this season |Y| theyve hit consecutive homers.
|Z| dir="ltr">It was Sotos 35th |A| and Judges 45th homer |B| of the season. Right |C| fielder Noel jumped at |D| the wall for each |E| homer, but came away |F| empty-handed.
In the second |G| inning, however, Noels reach |H| was just long enough |J| as he scored Clevelands |K| first run.
Noel opened |L| the inning against Yankee |M| starter Luis Gil with |O| a line-double off the |P| fence in left field. |Q| After Andres Gimenez walked |R| -- Gil entered the |S| game leading the big |U| leagues with 60 walks |V| -- Schneemann forced Gimenez |Y| on a grounder to |Z| second as Noel took |A| third.
Bo Naylor followed |B| with a sharp grounder |C| to first baseman DJ |D| LeMahieu with Noel going |E| on contact. Noel made |F| a headfirst dive toward |G| home, but plate umpire |H| Scott Barry called him |J| out as catcher Jose |K| Trevino applied the tag.
|L| dir="ltr">Noel immediately signaled to |M| the bench to challenge |O| the call. The Guardians |P| followed his cue and |Q| replays showed that Noels |R| long reach beat Trevinos |S| tag to the plate. |U| The run cut New |V| Yorks lead to 2-1.
|Y| dir="ltr">The Guards proceeded to |Z| load the bases with |A| two out, but Gil |B| struck out Ramirez for |C| the second time in |D| as many innings.
The |E| Guardians pressured Gil, who |F| left the game with |G| lower back tightness in |H| the fourth inning, from |J| his first pitch to |K| his last.
Noel and |L| Gimenez drew two-out walks |M| in the third. Schneemanns |O| single scored Noel to |P| tie the score 2-2. |Q| Gil ended the inning |R| by striking out Bo |S| Naylor.
The Guardians made |U| it 3-2 on Rocchios |V| leadoff homer in the |Y| fourth off Gils 1-0 |Z| pitch. It was Rocchios |A| sixth homer, but just |B| his fifth extra-base hit |C| since the All-Star break.
|D| dir="ltr">Anthony Volpe doubled home |E| Trevino with one out |F| in the fourth to |G| make it a 3-3 |H| game. Boyd walked Trevino |J| to start the inning |K| and he scored from |L| first on Volpes double |M| to the fence in |O| left center.
Boyd found |P| his groove after Volpes |Q| double. He allowed just |R| one baserunner until he |S| was removed with one |U| out in the sixth |V| inning. Nick Sandlin relieved |Y| and gave up a |Z| single to put runners |A| on first and second. |B| The inning ended when |C| LeMahieu bounced back to |D| Sandlin, who started a |E| 1-4-3 double play.
The |F| Guardians stopped the Yankees |G| from taking a 4-3 |H| lead in the eighth |J| inning. Cade Smith started |K| the inning for Cleveland |L| and walked leadoff hitter |M| Giancarlo Stanton. Trent Grishman |O| pinch ran with the |P| score tied, 3-3.
Smith |Q| struck out Alex Verdugo, |R| but Austin Wells, pinch-hitting |S| for Trevino, doubled to |U| the wall in center. |V| Schneemann crashed into the |Y| walk trying to make |Z| the catch and Kwan |A| came over from left |B| field to retrieve the |C| ball, and make a |D| strong throw to Rocchio, |E| the cutoff man.
Rocchios |F| throw home was to |G| the first base side |H| of the plate, but |J| Bo Naylor played it |K| on the bounce and |L| tagged Grishman with a |M| dive at the plate. |O| It was a close |P| play, but the Yankees |Q| did not challenge.
Boyd |R| allowed three runs on |S| four hits in 5 |U| 1/3 innings. He struck |V| out two and walked |Y| four on 85 pitches.
|Z| dir="ltr">Gil allowed three runs |A| on three hits in |B| three innings. He walked |C| six and struck out |D| three. Gil leads the |E| big leagues with 66 |F| walks.
Next: TBD vs. LHP |G| Nestor Cortes (6-10, 4.20) |H| Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. |J| Bally Sports Great Lakes, |K| WTAM, WMMS and the |L| Guardians radio network will |M| carry the game.
